I was looking into the bar mirror and saw her get up from the little table, so I turned from looking at them in the mirror to staring at them directly. Gary just sat, gazing into his beer like it was a crystal ball, and Mona smiled at him and walked out. I figured it was just like I told the chief: things were over and cooled down; all would be good, right? I grabbed my beer and headed back to the table where Gary sat with at least three uneaten burgers. I sat in the chair that was still warm from Mona. I didn’t want to think about it, so I picked one up and took a bite.

“Hey, man—everything OK?” I asked Gary.

“I really don’t know.” He went back to staring into his brew, and didn’t say anything else. I took that as a hint. I didn’t need to gab, I’d just drink this beer and eat these burgers, and as I reached out for another one I saw Mona go by in her convertible. Then, as I watched, the headlights went on in a black Lincoln Town Car that had been parked in front of her little Benz. I didn’t see anyone get in the big black car, but as soon as Mona took off its lights flashed on, it pulled out, and it took off in the same direction as the Benz. It looked like a Chinese guy was driving, but the windows had a heavy tint, so I couldn’t see who else was inside. Odd, I thought, and reached for the last little burger. It didn’t occur to me to say anything about it to Gary.
